The Permanent Observer: Youth and Media

The Permanente Observer: Youth and Media is an organization that invests in educating the younger generations to enable them to develop newspaper reading habits that will last well into adulthood.  It was this spirit that led our organization to promote and introduce the reading of a variety of newspapers in the classroom. The project "The Daily Newspaper in the Classroom" aims at bringing young people to consider the reading of newspapers as a way to critically evaluate current events and thus develop a habit of critical reading that can only lead to the development of a greater awareness of issues; this practice will contribute positively to making young people the free, informed and responsible citizens of tomorrow.

Now in its 10th edition, in this scholastic year 2009-2010 the project will see the participation of 1,786,538 students in the upper levels of the Italian secondary schools and the participation of 44,116 teachers who have decided to join us and make a commitment to this very important civic and social challenge. These numbers not only point to the success of the program, but mark also a historical first in the efforts of our project the "The Daily Newspaper in the Classroom".

In February 2007 the Osservatorio added an additional project on an experimental basis by introducing the newspaper in universities across Italy. The objective of "The Newspaper in the University" is to continue with the work initiated in the pre-university grades and aims to insure that students train to become the free citizens of tomorrow.  The project has been funded for the academic year 2009/2010 and will be active in a number of humanistic departments and degree programs in various universities across the country.
