The meeting between the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarellaand a small delegation of students and teachers participating in "The Quality Information in the Classroom" project, took place in the splendid Hall of Mirrors at the Quirinale Palace.
In his opening speech, President Mattarella declared: "I am very pleased to celebrate15 years of this extraordinary initiative. Andrea Ceccherini’s enthusiasm and tenacitycreated a valuable experience that is now very widespread and dynamic in our schools." Italy’s youth along with their teachers recognise the need to inform themselves - continued Mattarella - and master the tools that enable knowledge." The President also reminded the students how important reading is, especially for the current generation of "digital natives”. New technologies have fostered freedom and opportunities, but I believe that reading will continue to be key as it is the only tool allowing people to develop a real critical thinking and a communicative capacity with others. This is why I believe that your educational project on economic and financial literacy is fundamental."
Critical spirit and media understanding are the foundations of the project "The Quality Information in the Classroom" that, for the past fifteen years, has allowed more than 2 million students from High Schools, under the guidance of 45,400 teachers, to critically examine quality information by comparing three different newspapers. The President of the Osservatorio Permanente Giovani-Editori, Andrea Ceccherini, has come to the Quirinale Palace along with the publishers and editors of 17 newspapers participating in the initiative, the representatives of the 22 Banking Foundations and the 8 companies endowed with social responsibility that promote and support the initiative. "All this has been possible - said Andrea Ceccherini - because the Osservatorio gathered an unprecedented civil team and an extraordinary social coalition that has been able to promote an initiative of public type without receiving public money".
